1. Please tell us a bit about yourself, your background, what you do at Certua and outside of Certua?
I’m Cassie and I am the Head of Quality Assurance here at Certua. I have worked in tech start-ups and small businesses my entire career and have always enjoyed working in a fast-paced environment, working efficiently with the end user always at the heart of what we do. I have a real drive to make sure our products work well and make sense to the end user.
Outside of Certua I love spending time with my family and my two beautiful cats. I also am a big sports fan and love going to football games and watching the formula one.
2. How did you get into working in a tech role?
Like many people coming out of school, I did not have a clue what I wanted to do for a career. I was enthusiastic around art, and originally went down a graphic design route. However, after 2 years at college, I felt I didn’t want to progress this at university. So, I looked around for a tech apprentice role, and found a unique role in a technical product support role. Here I learnt my technical skills – and this gave me my chance to work in the tech sector.
I naturally transitioned into a testing role, I found a real interest in breaking things and creating bugs but also working through problems into solutions for a better user experience. In 7 years, I have gone from an apprentice not even knowing what code is, to Head of a Quality Assurance team, which both scares and excites me all at the same time!
3. What does your role entail & what’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?
As Head of QA at Certua, my end goal is making sure our products work well for the user and limiting the number of bugs that make it through to production, and hopefully none get through at all! I work with four other exceptional QA’s at Certua, and I couldn’t do my role without them. There is such a misconception people have about a tester role, it is never as simple as “does this work, yes or no?”. We all must have the technical skills to understand what a developer is trying to achieve, but also this coincides with making sure the product meets the end user goals. This is a unique blend between technical and non-technical. We also use many approaches to testing a product, from testing APIs directly to using a frontend portal, so there is a wide range of knowledge and technical understanding needed in how to perform all of these types of tests.
4. What has been the most interesting product to work on at Certua so far?
The most challenging but most interesting product is the life insurance product, a product which has many underwriting questions, 1000s of medical conditions, learning all about these things and how we offer a product based on answers given was super interesting. Also, the testing side where we ran around5000 test scenarios through our online portal using our automated UX testing tool. The day these tests finally all passed with no bugs is a day I will never forget (and the relief!).
5. What is one thing that surprised you about working at Certua?
Something that surprised me when working for Certua is that no job is too big for us. We take on the things you think are too difficult and develop it into something amazing. Taking old clunky business practices into shiny innovative technologies that work more efficiently for the user. We go the extra mile to make sure our customers and end users have everything they need by always adding and improving the products we provide.
